This job search has been on-going for… two months? Yeah, two months now. I’ve applied at many different places, re-hashed my position with Office Team, called numerous numbers from the Classified section of the newspaper, put in countless hours searching on-line on sites such as Craigslist and Monster, filled out more applications that I care to re-call, and smiled more times than I care to remember.
I’ve driven from one place to the next with the hopes that somebody somewhere would look at me and say, boy I would like to give that guy a paycheck in like two weeks.
And I think I’ve figured out why nobody will hire me.
Every application I fill out, I fill out the work history section and put down my last two jobs.
VRC and temping for Office Team. VRC lasted 3 months, after which I placed my 2 weeks notice and left. Office Team has produced little to no real results and has not landed me a job that is permanent. (Actually, I think the time I’ve been with them, I’ve spent more time “in-between assignments” than “on assignment”). My theory?
Spotty work history.
I had an interview at Kroger’s for a night stocking position that would run me from 11pm to about 7am. The timing is perfect for me. The job is perfect for me. However, one of the big things that came up was that my work history was “spotty”.
Looking back on it, maybe putting down a work history at all was the problem. But then, if I had gone in for the interview with that kind of white space, I would have had to explain it. And then I would have to explain why I didn’t list the jobs I had had.
I called back on the position today. No word yet. Hopefully tomorrow I will hear the words “You can start on Monday”. Or something similar. I don’t really care - as long as they are variations of the sentence “you are hired” I’m perfectly fine with it.
Oh, and my dad’s advice?
“…you should join the air force.”
Because there’s nothing better to solving your problems than running away from them. (And then of course, sarcasm isn’t the best tool, either, but you work with the ones you’re supplied).
