Let it go

Whatever forces are at work in the deep dark underbelly of the Internets have somehow managed to churn up the drainage system once again and let loose a torrent of words and voices from the past that are still up-in arms over something that is as concrete as concrete can be.

Years after the fact, one of the developers of the NGE for Star Wars Galaxies came forward and said what has been said many times before – that the NGE itself was a huge “fuck-up”. “Epoch grade” he called it.

And of course, with the Internets being what it is, fanbois and bloggers alike lit up the wires like some sort of mass influx of madness with all sorts of thoughts and quips about this very topic.

Anybody who plays Star Wars Galaxies knows that it was a mistake to push the NGE on the subscribers so parallel to the release of the then new expansion ToOW, but to continue to beat a dead horse is simply just that: beating a dead horse.

I find it somewhat entertaining that the same people that are on the official forums constantly flaming the very game that they pay for are the same ones who are logged in every other day, playing a game that they constantly flame. The answer is simple: if you are unsatisfied with a product or service, you cancel said product or service. Because frankly put, those of us who still play and enjoy this game do not give a shit about your two-bit flames on a game that we can still find enjoyment in.

Was the NGE a mistake? Yes. But that is the object of change. Change can often be measured in two ways – small, almost seemingly insignificant alterations or one large giant Elephant in the room. The NGE just happened to be the latter. But no matter which way you slice it, the overall game was heading in that direction anyway. We were on a train that was heading in that direction – the only thing that the NGE accomplished was the skipping of a few stops here and there.

So my ultimate suggestion is not that of trying to make peace. It is not that of trying to reason with anybody, or trying to flame the game or its developers. It’s that of one simple truth: either play and stop poking at old wounds that have long since healed, or stfu and sit quietly in the corner away from those of us who still enjoy this game.

There is no debate. There is no changing it back to the way it was. Get over it.

Congratulations! You’ve just won the Internet! You’ve figured out that slandering people anonymously is not only the preferred method of doing so, but that since you are anonymous, you will never reap the real life benefits of any real repercussions since, well, you’re anonymous!

You’ve figured out that what can not be said face to face [...]
